Colonial Whitpain
The original pronunciation of Whitpain was WHIPPEN.
The correct spelling of the family name of the Township’s original settlers is Whitpaine.
Whitpain Township was originally part of Philadelphia County.
The oldest gravestone in the Township belongs to Whitpaine family member, Ann McCarty, who died in 1715.
Centre Square was originally located in the geographic center of the township.
In 1733, Worcester was created and Whitpain lost much of its upper reaches.
There are two Pre-Revolutionary War churches in Whitpain - St. John’s Lutheran and Boehm’s church-which served as hospitals after the Battle of Germantown.
In 1762, Whitpain and Plymouth joined together as one district for a year.
Dawesfield was George Washington’s headquarters for a week and half in 1777, before moving onto Hope Lodge.
General Washington’s army marched through Whitpain six times.
Five pre-Revolutionary War “Mile Markers” still exist in the township measuring the number of miles to Philadelphia.
Blue Bell used to be called Pigeontown because of its large flocks of pigeons.
Most of the farmland in the Township’s northeast corner belonged to two rival farms -Normandy and Gwynllan. The owners’ wives were sisters, and heirs to a fortune.
A few hundred years doesn’t make much difference when it comes to domestic concerns. Historical records show that the citizens of Whitpain Township in the early 1700s had the same concerns as today’s residents - transportation and road maintenance.
Whitpain, Today
Whitpain Township is home to:
One of the few remaining one-room schoolhouse, the Franklinville School. It is being restored by the Historical Society of Whitpain.
Three church buildings that are more than 150 years old - St. John Lutheran, Boehm’s Church and Union Meetinghouse.
A college - Montgomery County Community College.
Four golf courses.
An airport - Wings Field.
Two major transportation lines - Pennsylvania Turnpike and Stony Creek Railroad.
Two major utility lines - PECO Electric Lines and Texas-Eastern Gas Line.
Two of the largest organizations in America, Aetna  and Unisys.
