This
month's meeting was held on Tuesday, April 8, 2008
Attended by: Joan B. Knies, and Joseph T. Steuer,
& Andrew Meehan
-
Joe
opened the meeting by reviewing plans for
the 2008 Beautification Program. As of April
8th, orders for 482-trees had been received.
Publicity has included coverage by the
Ambler Gazette, a posting on the Township
website, an application in the Township
spring newsletter, and a post card mailing
of 160-pieces to last year's participants.
This year's tree distribution will consist
of potted Leyland cypress and green-giant
arborvitaes and bare-root red maple and
flowering cherry. The Commission determined
that registration for the program would be
'shut-down' at 500-trees. It appears this
year's interest by residents is very strong
and participation significantly exceeds
prior years.
-
The next
agenda item was discussion of the 2008 Arbor
Day Program for school children. Once again,
this program will have the Commission
judging the student's Poem and Poster
Contest submissions, as well as distributing
200-evergreen seedlings to all participants
at the Prophecy Creek Park ceremony.
-
Joe, Joan and
Andy discussed the Tree Registry project.
The Commission agreed that following the
Beautification and Arbor Day Programs their
focus would be on updating the registry.
They agreed to select two ½ day blocks of
time at the next meeting during which the
Commission will inspect, identify, measure
and photograph each of the 25-trees that
will be highlighted in the 2008 Tree
Registry.
-
Andy noted
that during the Tree Registry project, he
will identify historic trees located on
Township property that require immediate
maintenance or ongoing care. The Commission
will then develop a program to ensure these
champion trees receive the appropriate level
of maintenance.
-
The meeting
adjourned at 8:00PM. The next meeting will
be on May 10th at 7:00PM.
